An in-depth review of the 28mm English Civil War Miniatures produced by Renegade Miniatures.

Renegade Miniatures

Renegade Miniatures is a privately-owned manufacturer of miniature figures. These figures are designed primarily for wargamers and are composed of "white metal," a pewter-like alloy composed mainly of tin and lead. All of their figures are supplied unpainted and most are sold in packs of around 8 figures. Renegade currently has a number of different lines, covering many different periods of warfare. These lines include: Ancient Chinese, the Punic Wars, the Dark Ages, the English Civil War, the American Civil War, World War I, and World War II.

English Civil War Figures

These days, the English Civil War is pretty far down the popularity list of historical periods that are commonly wargamed. That said, there are still many players who favour the strategy, tactics, and look that are found in the "Pike and Shot" Era.

Renegade Currently produces many packs for the English Civil War, including 8 packs of musketeers, 13 packs of pikemen, 7 packs of cavalry, 10 packs of Scottish combatants, and a few others. Each pack contains 8 figures (3 in cavalry packs) in approximately the same pose (ie. Musketeers firing, or pikemen charging).

The sculpting on Renegade's English Civil War miniatures is some of the best in the industry. The details are crisp and well defined right down to individual charges of shot, hanging from the musketeer's belts. The figures do tend to come with a bit of flash (extra metal bits left-over from the casting process), but nothing so severe that it can't be easily removed with a sharp modelling knife.

Although Renegade labels the miniatures as 28mm, the most common wargaming figure-size, they are bigger than most other miniatures in the industry that claim to be the same size. That said, miniature sizing is not an exact science. Some companies measure from the foot to the top of the head, others from the base to the eyes. Also, some figures are broader than others. I think it is probably safe to call these miniatures 28mm, but many people will probably find that they do not fit well with miniatures from companies on the smaller side of 28mm (such as Wargames Foundry)

All-and-all, these are great figures, with sculpting second to no other 28mm English Civil War range. Also, with packs currently selling for £9, this makes the price of an individual figure just over £1, which is pretty good these days. They also do special deals for buying multiple packs.
